The Communications team delivers communication services and products to raise the national and international profile and generate brand recognition of ONC consistent with ONC’s Communication Strategic and Annual Program Plans.  The team is responsible for developing consistent and clear messaging and brand implementation engaging a host of creative communications products and services to promote ONC’s unique capabilities across all divisions of corporate operations, science, observatory operations, innovation, learning and user engagement to a host of key audiences and stakeholders.

The Media Relations Officer (MRO) uses their expertise to communicate high-tech advances and scientific discoveries through traditional media to advance the public’s understanding of ocean observatories, their value, relevance and importance to the global ocean and planet.  The MRO is tasked with raising the profile of ONC on a national and international level, by identifying key strategic opportunities and proactively engaging the media by writing creative, exciting content relevant to a broad audience about ONC’s world-leading activities.  Internally the MRO provides leadership to ONC staff engaged in communication activities.

Qualifications and Experience:

The successful candidate will have a Bachelor’s Degree in journalism, communications and/or public relations and 5 years of communications and/or public relations experience.  The ability to recognize and build compelling stories, translate complex science and tech publications into plain language, and extensive media relations experience along with the knowledge of the traditional media landscape (nationally and internationally) are required.  Ability to build rapport and provide media support and training for scientists, engineers and technical experts, as well as lead and manage teams, and contribute to a collaborative and innovative culture are essential.  A science and tech background and/or an awareness of the current ocean science and technology conversation and issues, as well as the ability to communicate both written and verbally in French will be considered assets.
